The Saint Nicholas School in Alphaville, São Paulo, is an international educational institution for pupils between the ages of 18 months and 18 years.
In virtually every public institution the issue of energy-saving has to be addressed – no more so than when it comes to large buildings with a continuous flow of people and varying occupancy. In the case of the Saint Nicholas School hosting such a large group of pupils, the need was particularly acute, so it was decided to install Finder movement detectors and light dependent relays.
How do you solve the challenge of wasting energy, which can happen so easily just by simply forgetting to turn the lights off? Firstly we used an 11 Series light dependent relay to block the energizing of the lighting when the ambient light level was ok. In addition, a Type 12.51 time switch was used to limit the functioning of the lighting to the hours when the school was active, whilst retaining the option to switch the lighting on or off manually through the use of a Type 13.61 electronic step relay. In the classrooms and canteen a special solution was developed, where Type 18.51 PIR movement detectors were used to operate the lighting, but pre-set to operate only when they detected that the level of natural light present in the room was insufficient. As a further measure, the movement detectors were pre-set to turn the lighting off should no movement be detected beyond the pre-set time. In this way it was possible to reduce energy wastage by restricting lighting to when it was needed.
